Miyoo Mini — Firmware update
Quick answer
Button combo
Manual: copy new Onion zipSD(Merge/Replace)POWERA
Steps
- 1The original Mini has no Wi-Fi, so the built-in OTA Update app does not apply — update Onion manually from a computer.
- 2Download the newer Onion-v4.x.x.zip from the OnionUI GitHub releases and extract it.
- 3Copy the 7 folders over the SD root, choosing Merge then Replace so saves, ROMs and configs carry over.
- 4Insert the card and press POWER; the installer runs automatically and you press A when it finishes (the Mini powers off — turn it back on).
- 5Make an in-game save before updating, and after updating press SELECT on the Games tab to refresh ROMs.

On the original Mini, 'firmware update' almost always means updating Onion OS, and because the Mini has no Wi-Fi it is a manual job: copy a newer Onion release over the card and choose Merge / Replace so your data carries over. Onion's built-in OTA Update app needs Wi-Fi and only works on the Mini Plus, not on the original Mini. The base Miyoo (stock) firmware underneath rarely changes; you only reflash it from Miyoo's official firmware download if Onion needs a newer minimum. Always make an in-game save first, as some RetroArch save states can break across versions.
FAQ
- Can the original Mini use Onion's OTA (Wi-Fi) update?
- No. The OTA Update app requires Wi-Fi, which the original Mini does not have. Update Onion manually instead: copy the new Onion-v4.x.x.zip over the card (Merge / Replace) and let the installer run on boot.
- Will updating Onion erase my games and saves?
- No. When you copy the new release over the card choose Merge then Replace, and your saves, save states, ROMs, BIOS and configs carry over. Make an in-game save first as a precaution — some save states may not load after a big version jump.
- What is the difference between an Onion update and a firmware update?
- Onion OS is the custom firmware on the card and updates often (manually on the Mini). The base Miyoo firmware is the device's underlying system and only needs updating to meet Onion's minimum version.
